Maple Landmark Woodcraft

For 39 years, Maple Landmark has been making toys, games, and gifts the right way. Using local talent, sustainable materials and efficient processes, the passionate crew of 45 employees works hard every day to manufacture and deliver safe products to happy consumers, young and old alike.

One day in the 1970s, Michael Rainville, 11 years old at the time, had finished his chores and homework so his mother, Pat, decided to keep him busy. Supplied with a coping saw and sand block, Rainville set about cutting wood pieces and experimenting with different techniques in his parents’ basement. The first products made, spools and bobbin holders among other items, were sold at local craft fairs. Rainville made his first wholesale sale in 1979.

The fledgling business grew in the ensuing three decades, becoming a robust wooden toy manufacturer, weathering economic storms, and expanding facilities several times. With a building addition completed in 2015, the current factory in Middlebury, VT totals 28,000 square feet. Over these years, Maple Landmark acquired several other woodworking businesses including Montgomery Schoolhouse of Montgomery, VT in 2001.

Maple Landmark boasts a variety of capabilities, from lasers, to computer-controlled routers, to full-color digital printers. Through optimization of modern manufacturing techniques, Rainville’s childhood hobby has grown to over 1000 unique products. These include the popular NameTrains Wooden Railway System and the Schoolhouse Naturals baby and toddler toy line. Each day is different at the shop, though, including custom products for other companies.
Despite this growth and modernization, Maple Landmark has stuck to its roots. Still at the helm, Rainville has employed five other family members including his mother (yes, the one who got him started in the 70s!), wife, Jill, sister, Barbara, and two sons, Adam & Andrew.

With an unwavering commitment to American manufacturing and a strong passion for sustainable wood products, the Rainvilles and Maple Landmark forge on into the next decade of craftsmanship.
